Immerse yourself in the ancient art of Biblical scribing with The Qumran Inkwell Set, a meticulously crafted replica scribe kit that transports you back to the time when sacred texts were penned by hand. Made with reverence in the holy city of Jerusalem, this set is not just a collection of writing instruments; it’s a bridge to the past, an educational journey, and a spiritual experience all in one.

The papyrus, with its unique texture, is ready to absorb not only the ink but also the essence of your thoughts as you glide the reed pen across its surface.

The included booklet offers a window into the world of these scribes, explaining the painstaking process of creating Biblical scripts. It’s a narrative that will deepen your appreciation for the written word and its sacred journey through time. Accompanying this is an alphabet study card, featuring Ancient Biblical and Paleo Hebrew, inviting you to connect with the language that has shaped faith and culture.

This set is more than a gift; it’s an educational tool, perfect for Sunday school, Bible study groups, or anyone with a passion for history and scripture. It’s a tangible piece of the Holy Land, a souvenir that doesn’t just sit on a shelf but invites interaction and reflection.

Whether you’re a collector of Christian gifts, seeking church supplies that tell a story, or longing for a Holy Land souvenir that resonates with spiritual significance, The Qumran Inkwell Set is a treasure that transcends time. It’s an invitation to partake in a ritual as old as the scriptures themselves, to write, to learn, and to feel the presence of history in every letter you form.

The History

The Qumran community was composed of Essenes, a branch of ancient Judaism. They had their headquarters on the edge of the Dead Sea in the Judean Wilderness. They placed a high value on the written word of God. In their desert hideaway they worked in a scriptorium, a copying studio, where they produced exquisite handwritten copies of the Bible and important related documents. The Essenes of Qumran, perhaps fearing the coming Roman Army, hid many of their scrolls in caves around the Dead Sea. It appears that they planned to return for the scrolls later, even though they never did. The scrolls then became the greatest archeological find of the 20th century, changing archaeology, biblical studies and our understandings of antiquity. They are by far the oldest texts of the Bible that have ever been found. What is most important to the believer is how they show the remarkable preservation of our Bible to the present day.

The Inkwell

The inkwells found at Qumran testify of the importance of the written word in antiquity. These people were invested in preserving the books of the Bible for posterity. A scribe painstakingly copied each book by hand. The comparatively large number of inkwells, and the dedicated building for copying books all show us how important making copies of the Bible was to these ancient people. The importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls is their witness to the preservation of our Bible today. Most of the scrolls date from before the time of Christ, and they are older than any other copy of the Hebrew Scriptures by at least a thousand years. The fact that they agree with the traditional text of the Old Testament shows us that our copy of the Bible is accurate and trustworthy.

The Set

This set contains an exact replica of one of the inkwells found at Qumran. The set also includes a reproduction of a reed pen that the scribes at Qumran used when they copied the Scriptures. Perhaps most importantly, the set includes a copy of the ancient Hebrew alphabet and some papyrus. Now you can try your hand at being a scribe at Qumran! You can write your name in ancient Hebrew, or maybe your favorite Bible verse, or perhaps a blessing for someone. You will understand what it was like to be a scribe back in the century before Jesus. As you write with this simple reed pen, think back on ancient scribes who seated themselves with a similar pen and inkwell to make sure that God’s Word was written for others to read. Not just at Qumran, and not just the Old Testament. Our entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, was meticulously copied by hand for many centuries. It is due to this loving work that we have a Bible today.

The Witness

As you practice writing with these implements, you will experience how God preserved His Word for us today. You will understand the care with which ancient scribes copied the Scriptures and passed them down to us. God spoke to the holy men in the Bible times, and because of careful scribes, we can be confident that we have a perfectly preserved copy of God’s Word. Now, thousands of years later, the Bible has been translated from ancient Hebrew and Greek into your own language and you can be certain that the words remain the same. Why? Due to the care with which ancient scribes, and modern translators, treated the precious Word of God.

The Papyrus

Many people know that the ancient Egyptians discovered and used papyrus for writing. What people may not know is that papyrus was often used to copy and preserve Biblical texts. Some of the documents that shepherds found in caves in Qumran were written on papyrus. Most scholars believe that the first copies of the New Testament, and indeed the very words of Christ, were originally written on papyrus. Indeed, the earliest known copies of the Gospels are written on papyrus.

The papyrus included with this writing set is a careful reproduction of that ancient writing material. The aim of this set is to help you experience how learned scribes copied and transmitted the Bible to us today.

When you copy a verse in Hebrew onto the papyrus, let your imagination run free. Imagine that you are one of the few people in antiquity who knew how to read and write. Now you have been given the task of preserving the words of God for the next generation. However, the most important step in copying Scripture comes before you start. As you prepare to write, do what the scribes back then did and ask God to guide your hands as you copy His Word.
