But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand. (Isaiah 64:8)

Armenia, a country with a rich history and culture, is referred to as one of the world’s oldest countries. With numerous archaeological findings and ancient manuscripts, these Highlands are known for beautiful pottery, which has been embraced and interwoven in the Israelite’s way of life, thanks to pilgrim travelers. This transfer of culture has allowed us to have Armenian ceramics coming straight out of Jerusalem old city, hand painted and crafted by traditional Armenians who now live in the Holy Land.

Pottery is not a new concept. During Bible days, there were many references to both physical and figurative pottery. In Jeremiah 18, God instructed his prophet, Jeremiah, to go down to the potter’s house so that he could teach him a practical lesson. “Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.” (Jeremiah 18:3-4) As Jeremiah recounts his experience, we see where the pottery experience was used to demonstrate the work that God wanted to do with his people, He being the potter and them being the clay. He wanted Jeremiah to see that even if his people are difficult and inflexible, as the master Potter, he can create a new thing in their lives.

The prophet declares in Isaiah 64:8, “But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.” As the clay, we trust the potter to create beautiful work in our lives when we submit to him. He knows what is best for us, and when we allow him to execute this divine will in our lives, we become masterpieces.
