How beautiful upon the mountains, Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who proclaims peace, Who brings glad tidings of good things, Who proclaims salvation, Who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7)
Sandals played an integral role in the lives of Bible characters. Not only did they offer protection for one’s feet, but they also completed one’s outfit. Based on the description of these Biblical sandals, we understand that there was a sole, made from a variety of materials that covered the bottom of one’s feet, and it also had straps that secured it to the feet of the wearer.
In Genesis 14:23, we read, “That I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.” Similarly, John, in reference to Jesus’ sandals, said in John 1:27, “He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
Sandals also showed that someone was fully dressed. Ezekiel 16:10 states, “ I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments.” This text suggests that sandals of fine leather showed status and complimented elegant and expensive dressing. Sandals completed one’s outfit.
With such evidence, we here at Zak’s Jerusalem gifts have ensured that our Jesus slippers, both mens, and womens leather sandals, have supporting straps, and are suitable for all occasions.
The fact that the designs for our fine handmade leather sandals are taken directly from archaeological digs in Israel, adds to the authenticity of our Camel Sandals. Also, the leather composition featuring lasting soles and rugged straps, ensures that you feel fully dressed, and your feet are secured when sporting our sandals.
Whether you plan to walk dusty streets as did the disciples or to attend an elegant event, our unisex Sandals have you covered. On your journey, you can step in confidence when wearing your sandals, made in Jerusalem.
In biblical times the most common method of transportation was walking. People would walk from one town to another to visit family or conduct business. Jesus walked all over the Judean countryside and around the Sea of Galilee to bring healing and salvation to all who would hear him. The prophets would also wander all over the country spreading God’s message to his people.
With all of this walking, many people wore leather sandals made of camels leather. They needed sturdy shoes that could protect their feet from the briars, thorns, and rocks that they would traverse across. Can you imagine what your feet would be like after spending a day walking in the dusty and dirty streets? Your feet would be covered in dust, you might have even stepped in animal manure that littered the streets, along with all sorts of refuse and garbage. Your feet and sandals would be filthy, stinky, and dirty. Traditionally, the lowest servant of a home would have the role to wash the feet of guests that entered the home. They would have to kneel down and take off your filthy shoes and wash your stinky feet to make them clean. Could you imagine a more humbling job?
In John 13:1-17 Jesus shows the depth of his love for his disciples, and us, by taking on the role of the lowest servant. As they are reclining at the table to celebrate the Passover feast, Jesus, the Lord and God of all mankind, takes a towel and washes the stinky, dirty feel of his disciples. Jesus even washes the feet of Judas Iscariot, the man who would betray him that very night! Yet Jesus did not place himself above such a task. He loved his enemy and his disciples to the very end, giving us an example of how we should also love those who persecute us. If our Lord, the God of all creation, was willing to humble himself to wash our feet, who are we to say that we are above such things?
It is no wonder that John the Baptist said that Jesus was so wonderful and full of power that John was not even worthy to be able to untie Jesus’ sandals to wash his feet (Matthew 3:11). This job, which is normally assigned to the lowest servant, was too much of a privilege for John to comprehend. Can you imagine the honor of serving the Messiah by washing his feet?
You can purchase your own pair of genuine leather sandals at Zak’s Jerusalem Gifts. As you put on these sandals, think of Jesus, John the Baptist, and his disciples wearing leather sandals as they walked along the countryside. As you put on your sandals, remember this message and go forth and boldly share with those around you.
