But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the lovingkindness of God forever and ever. (Psalm 52:8)
Items made of olive wood displayed in Jerusalem and surrounding areas have for many years been a product of not only symbolism, ie; representing the well-known Mount of Olives spoken of in the book of Acts, chapter 1:9-12, but also for its beauty and density.
From the time of biblical writings, olive trees have been part of the landscape; a valued means of household importance and worth. How much better to have an olive tree on a property to serve as shade and protection, food and oil, representation of its leaves well known as a symbol of peace.. as well as its usefulness for items needed on a daily basis, such as cooking spoons and utensils.
Why olive wood over other woods?
Olive wood is known in particular for it’s density and beauty. To have an item made of wood is fine, but to have an item made of olive wood is to own something not only useful, but pleasing and of greater worth. This worth is met in the structure of the wood, growing with it’s grain less porous than most woods, giving a texture and hardness much appreciated by all who view a carved scene within it, or use a kitchen bowl or tool made from it’s rich and vibrant grain.
What is the biblical significance of olive wood in Israel?
This was the tree area most sought after as a good place to sit and rest. A tree of strength and fortitude, serving in ancient times as it does still today..as a place to retreat when seeking shade, peace and rest.
How do we know this is of biblical truth? Referenced to in the book of Matthew, chapter 24:3 we read: ‘And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” ‘
To our Lord, whom they sought, sitting among the olive wood trees meant a good place not only for him, but also for his friends.

Handcrafted Olive Wood Carving Made in Bethlehem
These unique pieces are hand carved by a Christian, family-owned workshop in Bethlehem. Olive trees are an important part of the landscape of central Israel, and are mentioned many times throughout the Bible. Some of the olive trees in Bethlehem are estimated to be as much as 2,000 years old, so olive wood is a piece of history in of itself.
Olive wood carving actually began as a Christian handicraft in the Holy Land as early as the fourth century B.C. for early pilgrims, and some of the descendants of these early craftsmen are still carving olive wood figures today. These carvings are not just a simple souvenir, but rather a piece of history that supports a long tradition of Christians living in the Holy Land.
