Byzantine Coin with Image of Jesus 6th century discovered in Jerusalem
daily wages for a worker under the Byzantine times in the Holy Land
This 6th century Byzantine coin, called a follis, was found in a Jerusalem archaeological site in the 1950’s. Uniquely, this coin bears the image of Jesus on one side, and the other proclaims, “Jesus, King of Kings” around the emblem of the cross – a mold that was used for only a short period of time under one Byzantine ruler. Folli, like these, were the daily wage for a working man in the Holy Land under the Byzantine Empire. Fashioned into a pendant framed in silver, this unique coin is now an emblem gift from the modern Jerusalem and her rich history!
A wonderful gift and reminder of our Lord and His Kingship!
