Ancient writers contrasted the loved lily of the valley, with its moisture from the fertile Sharon plains, to the wicked who were as dry chaff of the mountains (Isaiah 17:13) which blows away.

Her lover says that she is as a lily among the thorns, so He will come to her no matter the pain or the cost. Jesus looked at us and saw His church as a lily among the thorns.
