Menorah from Israel

Menorah from Jerusalem –

God gave Moses specific instructions for how to craft the original menorah. God exhorted Moses to carefully follow the design that He had given the prophet on the top of Mount Sinai.

This menorah went with the people as they journeyed in the wilderness. It was placed in the Tent of Meeting, just outside of the holy place.

The light was thought to represent the presence of the Spirit of God in the tent. The lamps would be lit at dusk and be allowed to burn all night. In the morning, it would be refilled with fresh oil and prepared for the next evening.

We see God speaking in relation to the menorah in the story of the boy Samuel. He is a small boy who serves the priests of the Lord in Shiloh. One night, he was asleep in the Tabernacle and before the “lamp of God” flickered out in the early morning, God came, stood and called Samuel’s name. From that moment to his death at an old age, Samuel walked in the presence of the Lord.

We who believe in Jesus the Messiah are heirs of the new covenant. The anonymous author of the book of Hebrews wrote of the construction of the worldly temple, built on divine precepts. He mentions the menorah, just outside the holy of holies, but separated from it by a veil.

When Jesus died on Calvary, that veil was ripped in two from top to bottom and the Comforter, the Holy Spirit of Almighty God was sent to dwell in each of us who believe. Jesus said that when He went away, He would send the Comforter to guide the faithful into all truth.

Now each of us can walk in the power and presence of the Lord, just like the young prophet Samuel.

God has given us the indwelling of His Holy Spirit! This is not something we should hide from others. God did not light His menorah in the world, the church, for us to hide our light under a bushel or a bed. He wants you to “let your light shine so that others may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.”

When we look at the menorah, we see a visible reminder of an invisible truth: the Holy Spirit lights our way.
