Widow's Mite Coin

Widow’s mite coin jewelry from Jerusalem –

Who can forget the example of the widow who gave the two mites? It is one of the most striking accounts of faith in all of the Scripture. This familiar story from the Gospels of Mark and Luke, tells us that she gave more in her poverty than the rich men who came before her.

Her simplicity and faith are memorialized in Scripture. She is contrasted with the rich men who cast great sums into the treasury. We are left wondering what happened to her since the Scripture does not tell us. However, since Jesus held her up as an example of faith in God, we can be confident that He took care of her. We can be confident that God took care of her, since she was an amazing example of righteousness. Centuries before she lived David said “I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”

From her we learn that God values consecration to Him instead of large gifts. The Creator of Heaven and Earth does not need our lavish offerings but rather He wants our heart. Just as the widow wanted to dedicate everything she had to God, so should we be willing to dedicate our all to Him. We too can be confident that He will care for us.

The story of the widow’s mite coin in the Bible is one of profound faith and sacrifice. It tells how a woman with no husband to provide for her gave her all to the Treasury with no proof of returns. In Mark 12:41, we are told that Jesus sat and observed persons who were giving to the Treasury, and those who were rich gave much. In the subsequent verses, we are introduced to a widow, who only had two mites.

In Mark 12:42, we read, “And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.” In other words, she put in two copper coins, which would be equivalent to a few cents in modern times. This woman was a widow, which means that her husband was dead, and as such, she had no provider, which may have been the cause of her poverty. Yet, with no one visibly taking a record or standing by to reward her, she made this great sacrifice. She did not withhold anything; she gave both her mite coins to the temple treasury.

Unknown to her, Jesus was observing her and used her sacrifice as a lesson to his disciples. “And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” (Mark 12:43-44) What a powerful lesson!

The widow’s mite coin was not worth much, but it cost her everything to give them. Jesus declared that while others gave from their excess, she gave from her want. Jesus is not very interested in how much you give, but he is more concerned about how you give, your motive for giving. The value of one’s offering is determined by what the gift costs the giver, and for this widow, her gift of two mites cost her everything.
