In the book of Exodus, God instructed Moses to make the original menorah out of pure gold. It stood on the south side of the chamber before the holy of holies. Across from it was the table of showbread. The menorah gave light to Aaron and his sons as they ministered in the Tabernacle.

The menorah is described in the Bible as the seven-lamp ancient Hebrew lamp-stand made of pure gold and used in the portable sanctuary set up by Moses in the wilderness and later in the Temple in Jerusalem.
