Are these clay lamps functional?

Clay lamps have been and still are practical and functional today. It is considered that its operation, although today we can consider it simple, was very ingenious at that time. It is not known for sure how it came about, but it is known that around the first millennium BC there was already evidence of its use, especially in the areas of Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Like any other clay object, to make a lamp, first the clay was made (which was not just any clay, but specially brought from the Dead Sea). Then, the clay was molded, giving it the desired shape, according to the taste of the person who made it or its recipient. It was then put to dry, either in the sun or in underground ovens, specially adapted to harden the clay.

Later, a lighter was introduced (which could be made of cloth or linen rope) and the inner tank was filled with oil (in Israel olive oil was used), it was left to rest so that the lighter was impregnated and finally it was lit to test its good functioning.

Although the originals are antique, they are still available and widely used as replicas, both for a beautiful lighting and ornamentation in the home.
